An opinion piece by Mira Mills
Studying abroad is so much more than just hitting the books in a new place; it’s a chance to dive into a whole new way of life. I wanted to share what a typical day looks like for me here in Perugia.
Morning: Waking Up in a Hilltop City
My day begins in Perugia, a city that feels like a living museum. Perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the Umbrian countryside, it’s hard not to feel inspired the moment I step outside. Whether I’m admiring the historic buildings or watching the rhythm of local daily life, it all feels magical. I usually start with a cappuccino and cornetto from Turan café, located just off the iconic Fontana Maggiore. It’s a peaceful moment, perfect for catching up on class readings or simply observing people on their morning commute.
Class Time: A Dynamic Learning Environment
Classes at the Umbra Institute are far from your typical lectures. There’s a strong focus on immersing students in the local community and culture. I’m taking electives in sustainability, Italian, ceramics, and marketing, and it’s incredible how much the city and region become part of our learning experience. Our courses often include local fieldwork and trips, blurring the lines between academic theory and practical experience.
For example, in my Digital Wine Marketing class, we visit local vineyards to see firsthand how they balance tradition and sustainability in winemaking. In my sustainability course, we’ll collaborate with a local farm and pitch ideas that could be implemented. This kind of community-engaged learning isn’t something you find at every university, but it’s transforming my educational experience.
Another aspect I love about Umbra is the small class sizes, which foster more personal discussions and help build strong connections with professors and classmates. My average class size is around 15 students, and though I’m usually not the first to raise my hand, the close-knit setting has pushed me out of my comfort zone. I’ve become more engaged in class discussions, which has sparked a deeper passion for my learning journey.
Lunch: Savoring Umbrian Cuisine
Lunchtime in Perugia is an experience unto itself. Whether I’m grabbing a quick panino or making my own meal, the food is always a celebration. Thanks to my Anthropology of Food class, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the culinary traditions that make Italian cuisine so special. I often meet up with friends to try new dishes or visit local markets for fresh ingredients. Cooking Italian recipes in my apartment has become a fun (and delicious) challenge, with endless opportunities to explore new flavors.
Afternoon: Cultural Exploration and Personal Growth
Perugia is alive with history, art, and culture. Most afternoons, you’ll find me wandering its streets, visiting galleries, or relaxing on the steps of the beautiful Cattedrale di San Lorenzo in the town center—one of the best spots for people-watching. Another favorite spot is the public park at the bottom of the Minimetrò. Whether I’m running, walking, or just sitting and observing, I always feel apart of the community.
Being an Umbra student is about more than academics—it’s about personal growth. This is the first time I’ve truly lived in a new place, and adjusting to a community I knew little about has been both challenging and rewarding. To encourage reflection and growth, I often spend time alone in the park journaling about my experiences. I also push myself to step out of my comfort zone by engaging with new people in conversation.
Evening: Embracing La Dolce Vita
As the sun sets, Perugia comes alive with music, laughter, and a strong sense of community. Evenings are usually spent catching up with friends at the piazzas, attending local events, or working on projects. There’s always something happening! The friendly vibe and close-knit atmosphere make it easy to balance studying with enjoying life. Most nights, I get together with a few friends to cook dinner. Our meals often last for hours, filled with conversations about our day or whatever is on our minds. Afterward, we might take a stroll around the piazza, sit on the steps, or have a mini study session to finish our homework before bed.
Conclusion
Every day in Perugia is a unique mix of learning, exploration, and personal growth. From morning cappuccinos to evening conversations with friends, my time here is more than just going through the motions—it’s about fully embracing life in a new culture. The Umbra Institute and the city itself constantly push me to step out of my comfort zone, whether through immersive classes, wandering historic streets, or trying new recipes. Each day may seem ordinary, but collectively, they’re shaping a transformative experience that I’ll carry with me far beyond my time abroad.
